I would definitely recommend visiting Uzbekistan. Although a tourist visa (for US citizens) is rather pricey ($160), this country offers an incredible amount of stunning architectural, historical and archaeological sites, as well as museums. Great shopping in bazaars and flea markets. Most of all very friendly, helpful, gracious people. Very safe for female travelers. Advice: Stay in small guesthouses rather than the larger hotels--these are very expensive! During the summer Uzbekistan is extremely hot and dry--dress accordingly (butmodestly!) I love the food; I eat from street vendors there--have never gotten "deathly" ill but recommend bringing prescription meds just in case! The cuisine is not vegetarian-friendly, though. Travel within the country is very cheap--I recommend the train, or hired taxi for trips between the larger cities.
